Sarnia, Anishinabek Territory – At 1:00 pm early this afternoon, members of Aamjiwnaang First Nation smelled what only can be described as a strong odour. Ada Lockridge, an Aamjiwnaang community member, took action and called the Suncor and the Ministry of Environment for answers. The direction of the wind indicated the odour was coming from the Suncor facility. The local Ministry of Environment representative later confirmed a “sour water” spill that contains Ammonia and was spilled when Suncor employees dropped some during equipment cleaning.
Inhalation of Ammonia can cause coughing, and nose and throat irritation. Ammonia’s odor provides adequate early warning of its presence, but ammonia also causes olfactory fatigue or adaptation, reducing awareness of one’s prolonged exposure at low concentrations. Children exposed to the same concentrations of ammonia vapor as adults may receive a larger dose because they have greater lung surface

Aamjiwnaang and surrounding community members are left with exposure to Suncor’s spill with no answers from the Suncor representative Jennifer Johnson.
“Well I bet they wouldn’t even have said anything if I didn’t call it in! I just asked what was I exposed to, Jennifer from Suncor, she is still saying they are investigating.” said Ada Lockridge.

There was a vapour release at the Chemical Plant at Imperial Oil’s Sarnia manufacturing complex Tuesday afternoon.

There was another, albeit short lived, Chemical Valley alert Saturday morning at Imperial Oil.
In plant emergency crews responded to a reported vapour release in the refinery at 7:46.
Refinery Operations Manager Chris Jessup says the hydrocarbon release was confined to the immediate location of the incident.
The unit was immediately shutdown and depressurized and the all clear called at 7:55am.

Vapour release at Imperial, on Friday the 7th of febuary, 2014. Residents reported a “foul stench” in the city’s south end. One caller also reported suffering burning and irritation in her eyes.

A small amount of oily water leaked into Talfourd Creek and, perhaps, the St. Clair River Tuesday from Shell’s Corunna refinery, the company says. About 300 milliliters, or 1.25 cups, entered the creek near Shell’s south dock area around 10 a.m. from a hose.
